About the Item

Dudley Vaill Talcott (American, 1899-1986), The Gate, 1930s. From the estate of the artist. In fine condition. This large aluminum gate is decorated with the figure of a reclining woman and four cats. The Gate was created by Talcott for his self-designed house in Farmington, CT. The work originally stood at the top of a stairway leading from the artist's dining room to a sunken living room. Exhibited: 'Aluminum By Design: Jewelry to Jets', organized by the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh, PA and travelled to The Wolfsonian, Miami Beach, FL, 2001-2002.

    Signed on base: "Hazel Brill Jackson". Also with artist's monogram. In fine condition. Hazel Brill Jackson (Born December 15, 1894, in Philadelphia) spent most of her early childhood in Italy. Attending the Scuola Rosatti in Florence, Jackson enjoyed afternoons at the zoo, pursuing her favorite pastime: drawing animals. World War I forced the return of the Jackson family to the United States where they settled in Boston. Hazel spent the next four years at the Boston Museum School, where she studied with Bela Pratt and Charles Grafly. Jackson returned to Rome after the war, where she worked with Angelo Zanelli and later had her own studio. With such works as Roman Work Horse and Ned (Mussolini's favorite jumper), she began to exhibit both in Rome and Florence, and eventually became a member of the Circolo Artistico di Roma. The sculptress returned to the United States in 1935 and opened a studio in Newburgh, New York. She continued to sculpt animals, concentrating on horse and dog portraits. Jackson had one-woman shows at the Guild of Boston Artists in 1938 and in 1968. In 1945, she was awarded the Ellin P. Speyer Prize by the National Academy of Design in New York City for Play-Day and Romance (a mare and foal group) and in 1949, she won the same prize for Indian Antelope. Hazel Jackson is represented in the Brookgreen Gardens collection by The Listeners, a sculpture group of raccoons, which was placed there in 1964.     Lucien Alliot French Art Deco Bronze The Gazelles 1930. The brown patina on a marble base signed on the bronze L Alliot and stamped bronze on the deer. This particular piece has exceptional rhythm where the two gazelles interplay in a movement depicting leaping over the hills or water—a very three-dimensional treatment showing the movement of the animals. Lucien Charles Eduoard Alliot (1877-1967), the sculptor, was born in 1877 Paris, France. His work was part of the sculpture event in the art competition at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français, was a member and the gold medal in 1920, out of competition, and was a member of the sculpture jury from 1934 to 1939. Alliot was well known for his figurative sculptures, exhibited at the Salon de Paris for many years. He received a third-place award in 1907 (which included funds for travel expenses) and a first-place award l in 1920. After he declared himself out of the artistic competition, he became a jury member at the Salon evaluating sculptural works from 1934 to 1939.
